Family Picnic Ideas

Tip #1: Turn Off the Electronics

You're going out together to enjoy the great outdoors and one another's company--so turn off the electronics and set them to the side. Save the selfie-taking for later (though you can certainly snap a few pictures to help you remember the day), leave the text messages and social media for another time, and simply soak in the sun, laughter, and make some memories.

Tip #2: Pack Your Food Properly

Are you bringing cold food that needs to be refrigerated? Make sure that you pack it properly, including cold packs to keep the picnic snacks chilled. Taking along a cooler, even a small personal one, is a great way to keep drinks and refrigerated foods cold until your family is ready to eat. Cold packs, unlike ice, won't melt or leave your food soggy. Place the cold packs on all sides of your food to help prevent the food from getting warm.

Tip #3: Bring Along Activities

Sitting on a blanket in the sun together and relaxing may be perfect for a short while, but the kids may quickly grow restless with nothing else to entertain them. Try bringing along a few activities that will keep everyone entertained. Whether you're at the park, at the lake, or at the beach, here are a few things that can add some extra fun to your picnic.

  • Break out the bubbles!
  • Try a little sidewalk chalk. Who can create the best mural? You can even create murals to insert yourself into, giving you the perfect chance to snap a few pictures.
  • Bring along a Frisbee. Older kids may enjoy a rousing game of disc golf, while younger ones will be content to simply pass it back and forth.
  • Try a jump rope to help burn off some energy. Extra points if the whole family gets in on the fun!

Tip #4: Pay Attention to Your Location

Location can make a big difference when you're making your plans. Scout it out ahead of time, if possible. You need a place to put your picnic blanket that is free of bugs and other hazards. Shade can help make everyone more comfortable and prevent the family from getting a sunburn or overheating. Know if there are bathrooms or a water fountain nearby. Knowing a little bit about your location can help lessen any stress that might arise throughout the day. After all, this is supposed to be a relaxing picnic!

Planning the perfect family picnic doesn't have to be a headache, and with a little preparation, picnics can be a highlight of any summer vacation! With these simple tips, you can make sure that you and the kids are ready to enjoy the day. So grab a basket, some sunscreen, a box of tasty Bobo's Bars, and get ready for an afternoon of fun!
